“Dash” was presented to the Animal Medical Center of Brooksville for generalized demodecosis (red mange, demodectic mange, hereditary mange) that was not responding to therapy given at another hospital. Dash had open sores, swollen feet, and a secondary skin infection that was severe. Dash’s owners were quite distraught and were contemplating euthanizing Dash.
Dash became a resident at Animal Medical Center of Brooksville for three weeks. We bathed Dash daily, treated his infections with antibiotics, and treated his mange. After three weeks Dash was playing and happy. His sores were healing and his hair was growing back.
Two months after Dash left Animal Medical Center of Brooksville he returned for a follow-up visit. Dash’s hair had grown back, his skin was clear, and he was a happy and playful dog!
Dash is our first hero to be inducted into our Paw of Fame.

An annual physical exam as well as a current heartworm test will be required on all dogs to purchase heartworm medication. Cats will need to have a physical exam only.
The reasons for implementing this policy:
- There is a risk that your pet can have a life threatening reaction if heartworm prevention is given to a heartworm positive animal.
- There are an increasing number of cases of resistance to heartworm medications. Your pet could have heartworms even if you give the prevention consistently.
- The American Heartworm Society advocates annual heartworm testing and lists testing as a “Standard of Care in Veterinary Medicine”.
- The Doctors and Staff at Animal Medical Center of Brooksville practice quality medicine and take excellent care of your pet.

Heartworm disease is caused by the growth of a worm transmitted by mosquitoes. There are four stages in the development of an adult heartworm; microfilariae, larva, juvenile worm, adult worm. It takes approximately 6 months for the adult worm to develop.
The adult heartworm can live up to 7 years. They live in the right side of the heart and eventually effect the blood’s circulation. Heartworms can cause many serious problems to your pet including but not limited to infection, congestive heart failure and even death.
Heartworms can live in cats too. It is recommended that cats be put on heartworm prevention. Although cats have a lower incidence of heartworm disease than dogs, their infestations can be very deadly and there is no treatment to eliminate heartworms in cats once they are infected.
At Animal Medical Center of Brooksville we have several products for heartworm prevention. The products can be administered orally or topically.
Topical administered products for dogs:
- Advantage Multi™ – heartworm prevention, flea control, and intestinal parasite prevention
Oral administered products for dogs:
- Interceptor™ – heartworm prevention and intestinal parasite control
- Heartgard Plus™ – heartworm prevention and intestinal parasite control
Topical administered products for cats:
- Advantage Multi™ – heartworm prevention, flea, lice, mite, and intestinal parasite control
Oral administered products for cats:

The flea’s life cycle begins with the egg stage. The adult must feed to begin reproduction. After taking a blood meal the flea will begin laying eggs within 24-48 hours. The eggs hatch in 1-6 days forming larvae. Under most household conditions, the flea will take 3-5 weeks to develop. Egg production can be massive; one flea can lay 40-50 eggs per day. It is very easy to have a flea infestation quickly.
At Animal Medical Center of Brooksville, we offer a variety of flea products for your dog or cat. We offer flea control products that can be administered orally or topically. The following is a list of those products available at the Animal Medical Center of Brooksville.
Topical administered products for dogs:
